EASY 20 MINUTE HAMBURGER & VEGETABLE GRAVY (Otherwise known as S.O.S.)
This easy 20 Minute Hamburger and Veggie Gravy, also known as S.O.S., is a delicious and budget-friendly meal. Served over mashed potatoes, rice, toast or pasta, this comforting dish is sure to bring feelings of nostalgia for those who grew up eating it. For me personally, as I grew up in a very low income household, this was a special treat I looked forward to because it contained meat. It brings back such fond memories whenever I make it.
My version is dairy free but if you prefer, feel free to add a bit of half and half or heavy cream for an even richer gravy.
Serves 4-6
INGREDIENTS:
2 Lb Ground Beef
1 Large Onion, diced
1/2 cup Flour
4 Cups Beef Broth
1 cup frozen mixed vegetables
1 tbsp minced garlic
2 tbsp Franks hot sauce (adds depth, not heat)
2 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
1/2 tsp red chilli flakes
1 tsp Salt (or to taste preference)
1/2 tsp coarse black pepper (or to taste preference)
Chopped Parsley (Try our Freeze Dried Parsley!)
DIRECTIONS:
In a large frying pan, cook the ground beef onions and garlic over medium/high heat until fully browned.
Drain or ladle out the excess fat reserving just a bit in the cooked beef.
Add the salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and red chilli flakes and stir to combine.
Sprinkle the flour over the meat and stirring constantly, cook for 3 minutes.
Stir in the broth and Franks Hot Sauce. Taste and adjust seasonings to your taste preference.
Bring to low boil and then reduce heat to low. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until gravy thickens.
Stir in a small handful of parsley and serve over mashed potatoes, toast, pasta or rice.
