HOMEMADE SOUTHERN SWEET TEA

One of our favourite take always from our many trips South to Louisiana, North Carolina and Texas will have to be the freshly brewed Sweet Tea you will find in every restaurant and home.  On  hot summer days, there’s not much better than an icy cold glass of sweet tea on ice.  We actually drink it year round and usually have to have several jugs on the go for family dinners.

The secret ingredient to amazing southern sweet tea is the tiny amount of baking soda added.  It helps remove the bitterness tea can sometimes have and keeps it tasting fresh longer.

Also, we like our tea pretty sweet so feel free to adjust the sugar to your own taste preference.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 6 black tea bags (or 3 family sized tea bags)

  • 2 cups water, for boiling

  • 1 1/2 - 2 cups white granulated sugar (to taste preference)

  • 6 cups cold water

  • Pinch of baking soda (about 1/8 tsp)

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Add the six teabags and pinch of baking soda to a large juice pitcher or jar.

  2. Pour the 2 cups of boiling water over the teabags and baking soda and let steep for 15 minutes.

  3. Remove the teabags, add the sugar and stir well.

  4. Add the remaining 6 cups of cold water and stir.

  5. Refrigerate until cold and then serve over ice cubes.
