BEEF & TOMATO PIZZA CAKE

I seldom use pre-packaged mixes when cooking but with this family favourite recipe, I make an exception.  The biscuity texture of the Kraft Pizza Kit paired with their unique pizza sauce makes a super yummy base for a beef and tomato pizza “cake” as my kids have always called it.  I make it in a deep baking dish to give it that cake feel.  Topped with seasoned beef and onions, a generous sprinkling of coarse black pepper, cheese and finally sliced fresh tomatoes, most of us finish it off with a drizzle of Tapatio hot sauce.  It’s the perfect snack for game nights.   I’ve also been known to triple the batch and make it in a huge disposable roasting pan when we have a gathering of family and friends.  Best of all, it literally takes 12 minutes to whip together before popping it in the oven.

INGREDIENTS:

1 box Kraft Pizza Kit (with sauce included)

1 lb ground beef

1 onion, diced

1 tsp salt

1 tsp black pepper

1 tsp garlic powder

3 cups grated mozza and/or cheddar cheese

2 tomatoes, sliced

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat the oven to 400 F.

Generously grease a 13” x 9” baking dish or cake pan.  Set aside.

Make the dough as per package directions.  Press into the greased baking dish/pan and allow to rest for 10 minutes while you cook the ground beef.

In a medium sized pan, fry the ground beef and onions together until thoroughly cooked.  Drain the fat.  Return to the stove and season the beef with the salt, pepper and garlic powder, adjusting the seasonings to your taste preference.

Spread the included pizza sauce evenly over the top of the dough in the dish/pan.  Sprinkle the included spice blend and Parmesan cheese evenly over the sauce.

Evenly distribute the beef over the pizza.  Top with grated cheese.  Arrange tomato slices over the cheese

Bake in pre-heated oven for 35-40 minutes for a single batch or 45 - 50 minutes if doubling or tripling the batch.

Drizzle with Tapatio Hot Sauce (optional)
