QUICK & EASY SLOPPY JOES
I love a good classic sloppy joe sandwich served on a super soft hamburger bun. There’s something so satisfying about the messiness of chowing down on these savoury and slightly sweet, throwback to my youth sandwiches! These are so much better than the canned goop they market as a manwich in the grocery store and are quick and ridiculously easy to whip up in 20ish minutes. The added red chili pepper flakes and Franks hot sauce can be left out but I dare you to try it with them as they add a deliciously mild and pleasing bite.
Serves 6-8
INGREDIENTS
2 lbs lean ground beef
1 large onion, finely chopped
1 stalk of celery, finely diced
1 green pepper, finely diced
6 garlic cloves, minced
2 1/2 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
2 1/2 tsp mustard
1/2 cup beef broth
1 1/2 - 2 tbsp brown sugar
2 (398 ml / 14 oz) cans tomato sauce
2 tsp franks hot sauce
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp red chili flakes
1/2 tsp seasoning salt
1 tsp salt (or more to taste)
1 tsp ground black pepper
6-8 hamburger or kaiser buns
DIRECTIONS
In a large skillet, sauté the ground beef over medium heat for about 7-8 minutes until cooked through. ( If not using lean ground beef, drain the fat before adding the rest of the ingredients)
Add the green peppers, celery, garlic and onion. Continue to cook for 5-7 more minutes.
Add the rest of the ingredients and stir well.
Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat. Allow the mixture to simmer uncovered for 8-10 minutes. Adjust salt and pepper to your taste preference.
Spoon over the bottom of a toasted bun and top with the other side.
